Font Unknowns Research¶

This report summarizes the research pass over the unknown font-provenance bucket from the PMM font index.

At the start of this pass, the generated index had 78 families marked unknown. Most were not actually unknowable; they were aliases, old Google Fonts Early Access names, small-caps variants that exist in google/fonts but not in the CSS2 API, or system fonts that should be labeled as restricted rather than unknown.

Current implementation status: all findings in this report have been applied to the generated index. The unknown bucket is now empty; remaining caveats are represented as fallback-only, likely-clean, restricted-redistribution, custom-license, or conflicting. A follow-up pass also added self-hosted previews for the smaller clean Google Fonts repo / Early Access families that are not served by the public CSS2 API.

Executive Summary¶

The original unknown entries have been reclassified as clean, likely-clean, restricted-redistribution, or conflicting with explicit evidence links.
The largest clean group is Google Fonts / google/fonts repo families whose exact PMM names are not accepted by fonts.googleapis.com/css2.
SC in the investigated Latin families means small caps. These are real google/fonts OFL families, but Google CSS currently rejects the exact SC family names.
Korean Windows/HanYang fonts no longer stay unknown; they are restricted-redistribution with system-font-preview. The docs site tries the local system font first, then warns when the browser's best-effort canvas check cannot detect it.
Strong has been tentatively identified from a PMM render probe as the Gaslight/Cyreal Strong by Roman Shchyukin. FontMirror, Online Fonts, Figma, and WFonts all point to the same Strong-Regular / version 1.001 / SIL OFL metadata. Older STRONG Regular enStep/Altsys records still exist on the web, so keep a caveat, but the PMM entry no longer looks like that font.

Implementation Notes¶

Completed follow-up:

Added self-hosted previews for the smaller clean Google Fonts repo files that fail CSS2, including Decovar Alpha, AmstelvarAlpha, the Big Shoulders SC families, Fragment Mono SC, Signika SC, Signika Negative SC, Hind Colombo/Jalandhar/Kochi, Bungee Color, and several Early Access display families.
Kept oversized or special-case fonts fallback-only for now, especially Noto Color Emoji Compat Test, Jeju families, and KoPub Batang.
Preserved bundled OFL.txt files next to each self-hosted Google repo preview font.

Possible next implementation pass:

Add script-appropriate preview samples for Myanmar, Balinese, Japanese, Sinhala, Gurmukhi, Malayalam, Lao, and Telugu families.
Add WOFF2 conversion for the repo-sourced TTFs if payload size starts to matter.
Keep Strong as a likely-clean Gaslight/Cyreal match from the PMM render probe, while preserving a note about the unrelated enStep/Altsys STRONG Regular name collision.
